Imani: Akufo-Addo failed to convince on free education policy

Policy Think Tank, IMANI Ghana says it still stands by its earlier submission that the free education programme being promised by the main opposition NPP is not feasible.

The flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday presented a four year cost implication of the free education policy when he took his turn at the IEA Presidential Encounter.

It was the first time Nana Akufo-Addo was disclosing the cost of the much publicized free education policy which he said will be less than one percent of the country’s GDP.

But Communications Director of IMANI Ghana, Selorm Branttie, in an interview with XYZ News said the pronouncements made by Nana Addo were not convincing enough.

“What are we going to sacrifice in order to put this out there, are we thinking about the future cost projection in terms of how the population is even going to increase?” He queried.

“The number of people in terms of our demographic at the SHS going stage and how we are going to cater for all these things and even onward into them graduating and how the market or the economy is going to absorb all these SHS students into either tertiary or any other institution.

“That is why we are saying that a simple pronouncement of a policy at such a forum would not be enough to sway our judgment in terms of what we believe and taken our time to analyze”.
