Doctors demand action on their conditions

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called on the government to take urgent steps to meet the demands of doctors in the country in order to retain their services.

In a communiqu? issued at its 4th National Executive Council Meeting, the GMA expressed dissatisfaction with what they termed the Government?s reluctance to conclude negotiations on conditions of service for doctors.

The communiqu? urged the government to adopt pragmatic policies to attract and retain doctors in the country as an important factor for its successful operation.

The association warned that failure to address pertinent issues facing the health sector would lead to the total collapse of the health care delivery system of the country.

It cited the closure of Maternity Unit of the Tema General Hospital a few months ago due to the inadequate number of doctors, and attributed it to the constant, systematic and escalating exodus of doctors.
