The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has entreated Ghanaians to as much as possible adopt good maintenance culture as part of its sanitation practices.
According to the Minister, the proper maintenance of essential facilities such as markets, toilets and water facilities go a long way in ensuring the health safety of any given population.
“Sanitation is not just about building new facilities, how well we maintain the old ones is also important. If we build new markets and fit it with all the necessary facilities without maintaining them, we will be making no progress.”
The Minister made the statement Thursday morning when she, together with her Deputy, Michael Gyato, paid a visit to the Nungua market as part of her sensitization tour of Municipalities within the Greater Accra Region which started three weeks ago.
She entreated the traders not to put their business interest above the health of their customers.
“When you sale it is for money, but in the process you should make sure it is safe for consumption. If it is meat you sale make sure it is certified by a veterinary doctor.”
The team made a stop at the Nungua Secondary School where the Minister advised the headmistress of the school to, by practice, inculcate good sanitation practices into the students.
The Minister and her deputy further went to Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipality where she visited the Zoompak Waste Transfer Station.
She inspected facilities at the station including their health waste management station.
She also made a stop at the Teshie Market where she interacted with some market women and advised them on the need to adopt good sanitation practices.
