Increase Salaries Of MPs – Speaker

... $2,000 a month will be fine
... I’m entitled to free medical attention, like my predecessor...

The Speaker of Parliament, Peter Ala Adjetey has urged the Executive to explore the possibility of reviewing salaries of Members of Parliament. (MPs). According to him, it is about time Ghanaians realized the important roles played by MPs and appreciate why an upward adjustment of their salaries is necessary.

Mr Ala Adjetey made the call at the launch of a new Parliamentary newsletter -‘The Legislature in Ghana’. He noted that the $300 a month salary paid each Ghanaian MP is meager as compared to that of other African countries.

“If people in Kenya are getting $7,000 a month, and we in Ghana are even getting $2,000 a month, that will be something, but $300 a month, it is ridiculous, absolutely”, the Speaker noted.

Referring to media reports and criticisms of his recent medical treatment and vacation, which cost the state $15,000, Mr Ala Adjetey said he has the right to enjoy the facility since his predecessor benefited from a similar package.

“I’m entitled by appointment to free medical attention, whether locally or abroad, so what is the trouble. Was that not the same thing about Mr Justice D. F. Annan. Didn’t he go for treatment? Why didn’t you make noise about it? He is still going for treatment at public expense. Why don’t you make noise about it?”.
