New Edubiase (Ash), Aug 8, GNA - The New Edubiase Government Hospital has since the beginning of the year to date recorded more than 80 per cent of anaemia cases among pregnant women.

The situation had resulted in the deaths of many pregnant women in the Adansi East District of Ashanti.

Madam Janet Oduro, a public health nurse at the hospital, disclosed this at a day's workshop organised by the New Edubiase sub-district for 30 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) at the weekend. The workshop was to impress upon the TBAs the need for them to advise pregnant women in their communities to attend antenatal clinics regularly before they deliver.

Madam Oduro asked the TBAs to also pay regular visits to pregnant women in their localities to educate them to take balanced diets always so as to gain enough blood.

She reminded them about the importance of their work in child delivery since there was an acute shortage of nurses and appealed to them to assist in bringing down the high rate of anaemia cases and deaths in the district.

Madam Oduro, however, cautioned them not to handle serious and complicated cases. They should refer all such cases to the nearest hospitals and clinics, she advised.

The TBAs commended the Adansi East District Health Administration for organising the workshop and promised to support the hospital's effort at reducing anaemia cases among pregnant women in the area.
