Incumbent NPP MP loses seat at Mampong primaries

Kumasi, May 14, GNA- Mr Peter Abum Sarkodie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Mampong Constituency in the Ashanti region, on Tuesday lost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary primaries to Mr Francis Addai Nimo, an engineer at the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA).

The election, which was held at Mampong, was conducted and supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC); saw the incumbent MP obtaining 46 votes out of the 102 total votes whilst Mr Nimo had 47 votes with Mr Ampratwum Sarpong, Deputy Ambassador to India obtaining nine votes.


Dr. Sarfo Adu Kwame Asubonteng, the second Ashanti Regional Vice-Chairman of the Party called for unity among the party executives and the MP-elect to help build the party to win the 2008 election. Mr Nimo thanked them for their support and confidence reposed in him, saying that, he would work with the people in the constituency to help speed up its development.

Oheneba Akwasi Duwaah, the Constituency chairman congratulated the winner and thanked the delegates for the peaceful manner in which they conducted the election.


In another development, the Kumawu Constituency primaries of the NPP held at Mampong could not produce a winner as both candidates, namely Mr Yaw Baah, the incumbent MP and Mr Ofori Adusei polled 51 votes apiece. The aspirants pleaded with the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Party to fix a date for a round-off of the election.
