Industry to play a part in design of education curricula

The design of the country’s education and training curricula will soon have the interest of business and industry represented in order to reduce the rate of unemployment.

This is part of recommendations made by over 300 participants at the end of a two-day Conference on Bridging the Gap between Education/Training and industry on Tuesday.

The Conference was held on the theme: “Achieving Strong Partnership between Education/Training and Industry: The Way Forward”.

A 16-point communiqué issued called for a periodic retooling of skills of instructors in the various schools through regular training in the world of industrial work.

“Institutionalize and increase the duration of internship and practical attachment for students to enable them appreciate what is taught in class and what happens in the workplace,” another recommendation read.

Minister of Education Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang assured the participants that the Ministry will commit to implementing their recommendations, adding that the Conference should be sustained.

“We have a system that we can make better,” she said.

“Our problem is that the playing field is not even and our conviction is that the playing field can be made even and that is why we are here to listen to industry.”
