Takoradi, March 27, GNA- A 13-member Takoradi Polytechnic Council was launched on Saturday with a call on members to infuse sense of self-confidence in the teachers and students of the institution. Miss Elizabeth Ohene, Minister of State in-charge of Tertiary Education, made the call at the inauguration of the council, which coincided with the third congregation of the polytechnic.

She said she was particularly elated that the Polytechnic runs more scientific and technical courses, and that its diploma receives credibility from industries and the community.

Miss Ohene asked the council to resolve disputes at the Polytechnic through discussion and not through violent demonstrations. She said her Ministry had received suggestions from the various polytechnic councils on ways in which the PNDC Law 321, which set up the Polytechnics, could be amended to better reflect the needs of Polytechnics 10 years after having have been established as tertiary institutions. Professor Daniel Mireku Gyimah, Chairman of the Council, said the council was the second of its kind at the Polytechnic.

He said the first council was inaugurated on June 1994 soon after its conversion to tertiary status and stayed on until it was dissolved in January 2003.

Professor Gyimah paid tribute to members of the first council for their dedication to duty and for laying a solid foundation for the second council.
