The rich culture of Asanteman (Asante Kingdom) was on full display to the entire world once again during the four-day funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

The world saw the culture of the Asante Kingdom during the 25th anniversary of the enthronement of its leader, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, last year (2024).

From Monday, September 15, 2025, to Thursday, September 18, 2025, the culture of Asantes when the kingdom is in mourning, and not in a celebratory mode like the celebrations seen during the Asantehemaa's Silver Jubilee, was on display.

Below are highlights from the four-day funeral, which is traditionally referred to as Dote Yie.

Day 1:

Monday, September 15, 2025, marked the beginning of the Dote Yie at the Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asanteman, in Kumasi.

On Monday, the mortal remains of the late Asantehemaa were displayed at the Manhyia Palace for public viewing. Hundreds of people from designated groups filed past the remains to pay their last respects to the late queen mother.

Before the public viewing, which lasted from 5 A.M. to 5 P.M., some rituals were performed the night before by traditional priests and priestesses of the Asante Kingdom.

Day 2:

The public viewing and filing past continued for the second day of the Dote Yie, Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

Different societal groupings, including political parties, educational institutions, associations, religious groups, as well as members of the general public, trooped to the Manhyia Palace to pay their last respects to the late Asantehemaa.

Day 3:

On the third day of the Dote Yie, Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the Asantehene sat in and received delegations from across Ghana and abroad, chiefs, government officials, clergy, and international dignitaries, who came to pay homage to him.

Also among the groups who came to pay homage to the Asantehene were members of the Judiciary, the Ghana Bar Association, security services, as well as Ministers of State and Members of Parliament.

One of the eye-catching moments from Wednesday was when priests and priestesses of Asanteman commiserated with the Asantehene and prayed for him.

Day 4:

On the final day of the Dote Yie, Thursday, September 18, 2025, which was the peak of the final rites, there were basically two parts. The Asantehene sat in and received delegations who came to mourn with him.

Among the dignitaries at the event were the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.

Also present at the event were members of the diplomatic community, a former presidential candidate, ministers of state, and members of the Judiciary, led by acting Chief Justice Paul Baffor-Bonnie.

After receiving the dignitaries, the Asantehene retired to the Manhyia Palace and re-emerged with the mortal remains of his late queen mother.

The king of the Asante Kingdom was majestically riding on a palanquin as the mortal remains of the late Asantehemaa preceded him.

A Christian burial service was held for the second part of the fourth day of the Dote Yie before the mortal remains of Nana Konadu Yiadom were taken to the Breman Royal Mausoleum, where she was laid to rest at midnight.
