Accra, Oct. 25, GNA 96 The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) on Wednesday donated a cheque for 30 million cedis, to the Accident Centre of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra As part of activities marking its Insurance Week celebration.
Mr Benjamin Acolatse, Vice President, and Mr Gabriel Glover, Executive Secretary, both of the Association, jointly made the donation after a public lecture organized by the GIA at the Kofi Annan ICT Centre.
Mr Acolatse said the insurers were not happy about the recent spate of accidents especially on our roads, victimizing innocent people. The Vice President said it was on account of this that members of the Association found it necessary to support the Accident Centre. He expressed the hope that the money would be used judiciously to enhance operations of the Centre.
Mrs Cynthia Boateng, Senior Health Administrator and Ms Eleanor Odeaman, Nursing Sister, both of the Accident Centre were led by Dr Michael Segbefia, a Consultant to receive the cheque. They expressed their gratitude to the Association.
Dr Segbefia said the donation would go a long way to support the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), adding 93I will also use this occasion to appeal to other associations, companies and institutions to emulate this gesture in order to save lives=94.
He announced that 5,000 accidents were recorded last year at the Centre as against 3,000 between January and October this year. The week-long activities include public lecture, media interaction, dinner dance and a thanksgiving service. 25 Oct. 06
