Interior Minister sets up nine-member committee to investigate police-military clashes

The Interior Minister Ambrose Dery has set up a nine-member committee to look into police and military clashes over the past five years.

On May 16, some police and military personnel clashed in Tamale leading to personnel of the Ghana Police Service abandoning their duty post.

Reports indicate that the attack started after a soldier was arrested by the Police for assault.

The committee members comprising of both military and police personnel has Victoria Esiaduwaa, a State Attorney as its chairperson.

Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery charged the committee to ensure that due diligence is done to bring all involved in the clashes to book.

“Investigate the immediate and remote causes of the clashes between the police and military in Tamale on 16th may 2018. Investigate the cause of any other police military clashes that have occurred within the past five years, any actions taken or lessons learnt to make recommendations for sanctions against those found culpable and appropriate compensation to deserving victims of the clashes.”

A member of the committee, Brigadier General Kwame Oppong-Kyekyeku (retd), said the committee would be diligent and ensure that it does not violate the laws of the country.

“We are going to study the terms of reference as indicated, and also look at the mandate that we have been given, and work within the laws of this country.”

The committee is expected to present their report to the Interior Ministry by August 31, 2018.
