The Ghana Police Service has vowed to hunt down political parties that encourage minors to register in the upcoming limited voter registration exercise scheduled for April 28 – May 8, 2016.
The limited biometric voter registration exercise is to allow voters, who have attained the voting age of 18, and those whose names are not in the electoral roll, the opportunity to register.
Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, wants religious leaders to discourage their members from allowing their children below 18 from registering.
He gave the warning during an encounter with religious bodies in the region in preparation towards the upcoming limited registration exercise held at the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters on Friday April 22.
“Ghana is our only country and we have nowhere to seek refuge. All our neighbouring countries speak French, which we do not understand. The voters’ register is opened to all citizens, who have turned 18 and above,” he stated.
“I will urge parents and leaders to help advice our children, who are underage, not to participate in the registration exercise. We will deal ruthlessly with anyone, who tries to engage in this act; we will arrest all of them,” he added.
