A research conducted by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other collaborators in health administration in the Lawra District of the Upper West Region has revealed that most people do not use iodated salt because of its high cost.
The advantages of iodated salt over the ordinary salt has also not been emphasised over the years in most parts of the district.
Mrs Beatrice Kunfah, Lawra District Director of Health Services said this during the regional launching of iodated salt in Lawra.
She therefore, called on salt producers in the country to consider re-packaging the iodated salt into smaller satchets, which would be affordable to people, particularly in the rural areas where there are numerous iodine deficiency disorders.
The District Director urged both sellers and producers to also collaborate with various health directorates to educate the people to strictly adhere to the use of iodated salt to reduce the high rate of iodine deficiency disorders, especially goitre.
