Lawyer Captain (rtd) Nkrabeah Effah-Dartey has added his voice to the numerous calls by a section of Ghanaians to end ‘galamsey’ saying it would be a joke to control and ban the menace in Accra.
The Former Lawmaker juxtaposed ‘galamsey’ to Prostitution which has become part of a section of people in the country who make ends meet from it.
‘In my honest view, if we sit in Accra and legislate to ban galamsey, we would be joking. It is like saying you are banning prostitution. You can control it, but to ban it, I’m afraid because it is something people do every blessed day,” he pointed out on Accra-based Okay FM.
He cited that lots of youth in his area (Berekum) in the Brong Ahafo Region earn Gh¢100 to Gh¢200 from activities of ‘galamsey’ daily.
Captain (rtd) Effah-Dartey discounted claims that chiefs were directly involved in ‘galamsey’ suggesting that illegal miners be registered in order to control their activities.
‘Galamsey’ operators have been destroying water bodies in the country.
