It's not enough to condemn, sanction Hajia Fati - Lecturer to NPP

A Senior Lecturer at the University for Development Studies, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw has described as unfortunate, attacks on Journalists in the country by elements in the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and called on government to show decisiveness by dealing with the issue once and for all, to curtail its recurrence.

A Voiceforous Activist of the ruling NPP, Hajia Fati slapped a Multimedia journalist at the party's headquarters a day after Ghana hosted World Press Freedom Day.

The journalist, Ohemaa Sakyiwaa Ahwenepa, had been taking a photo of the vociferous woman whose refusal for a party member to pick nomination forms was creating a scene.

Hajia Fati explains she thought the journalist was an onion seller.

But reacting to this in a Facebook post, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw condemned the increasing levels of attacks on Journalists in the country and charged Government to deal with the issue proactively. He said it was not enough for the ruling party to just condemn the actions of Hajia Fati but needs to show decisiveness by sanctioning her to serve as a deterrent to others.

He reiterated that "if Government appreciates that the fundamental human rights of its citizens must be upheld, then it must not just condemn but sanction Hajia Fati to serve as a deterrent to others".
