Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament
Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has said that golf is not only for affluent individuals, as many assume, while sharing his personal journey in the sport.
According to him, he began golfing in Winneba after being introduced to the sport by an elder statesman who converted his farm into a golf course.
He noted that at the time he was running his business, which made it difficult to commit fully, but after careful consideration he agreed to take up the sport.
Basic golf rules every beginner should know
“The golf course was at Winneba Golf Links. I was introduced to golf by an elder statesman in Winneba, who had converted his farm into a golf course. He spoke to me about it. At the time, I was running my logistics business in Awasu, transporting bauxite from Awasu to Takoradi, and I found the work quite stressful.
"Back then, we didn’t have tracking devices, so I had to manually monitor the trucks as a young man. He advised me that one way to manage my mental health, reduce stress, and build resilience for my work was to get on the golf course. He pushed me into it and even bought me my first set of clubs in 2008,” he said in a video shared by UTV on X.
The Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency further disclosed that Prince Amoabeng, CEO of UT Bank, guided him in learning the game.
He emphasised that golf is not reserved for the wealthy but rather requires commitment from those interested.
“Around 2008, when I came into contact with Amoabeng of UT Bank, he started talking about golf. Through him, I understood the game properly. People say it’s for rich men and all that, but I don’t believe that. It isn’t just for the rich,” he added.
