A senior lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kwasi Amakye-Boateng, has advised the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on his choice of a running mate.
He mentioned that since Dr. Bawumia is from the Northern Region, selecting a running mate from a different area would be politically wise.
He emphasized that the Ashanti Region, being the NPP's stronghold, should be the source of the running mate to maintain the party's support base and build on their achievements.
Amakye-Boateng pointed out that the current dynamics within the NPP require that Dr Bawumia's running mate be from the Ashanti Region; otherwise, it would be "suicidal" to the party's prospects in the 2024 general elections.
"The NPP has lost its grip on the Ashanti Region, and it would be beneficial to select a running mate from there. Personally, I don't think the party can ignore this region. The current situation in the party and the unfolding context demand it," 3news.com quoted him as saying.
He also cited the Ejisu by-elections as evidence of the party's diminishing popularity in the region.
Recently, Sammy Awuku, a member of Dr Bawumia's campaign team, revealed that the vice president has chosen his running mate, which will be announced soon.
Dr Bawumia is currently on a regional campaign tour, seeking support in preparation for the elections.
The general elections are scheduled for December 7, 2024.
