It will be worrying if IGP Apeatu was sacked because of NDC rumour' - Kwesi Pratt

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has reacted to reports that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) was dismissed because of rumours that he was surrounded with people who were championing the course of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

A statement from the presidency signed by Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin, Monday said, “the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Monday 22nd July 2019, directed the Inspector General of Police, Mr. David Asante-Apeatu, to proceed on leave, with immediate effect, pending his retirement from the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, 14th August 2019.”

The President thanked him for his many years of service to the country and wished him well in his retirement.

In his place, the President has asked the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, to act as IGP until a substantive IGP is appointed in accordance with the Constitution.

A Daily Guide report, Tuesday indicated that David Asante-Apeatu was relieved of his position before his contract date would elapse, because of reports that he surrounded himself with officers perceived to be working against the current administration.

This rumor follows the fact that his Executive Secretary, Chief Superintendent Peter Launchene Toobu resigned from the Police Service to contest as a parliamentary candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Wa West Constituency of the Upper West Region.

Reacting to this during a panel discussion on Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo', Kwesi Pratt said if indeed it is true that the former IGP was sacked because of the reason given by the newspaper, 'it will be very worrying'.
