The Speaker of Parliament, Peter Ala Adjetey will occupy the highest office of the land - President of the Republic of Ghana - from Sunday when President Kufuor leaves for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Brisbane, Australia. He will take charge till the President or Vice President Aliu Mahama returns to the country from their foreign engagements.
The Vice President who should have acted in the absence of the President is currently performing the Moslem annual pilgrimage to Mecca as head of Ghana’s delegation.
The constitution of Ghana stipulates that the Speaker of Parliament shall act in the absence of the President or his vice. On August 25, last year, when the President, his vice and the Speaker of Parliament were all out of the country, the Chief Justice who is the fourth in line acted for a day.
