Coach JE Sarpong has expressed disappointment at Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan’s decision to rescind his international retirement Wednesday.

Gyan indicated via a statement on Monday of his unavailability for the upcoming Afcon in Egypt and, subsequently announced a shock retirement from national team duties. This was as a result of issues surrounding his captaincy ahead of the competition.

The outspoken trainer believes that the U-turn by the Ghana legend may not go down well with colleagues at the Black Stars camp.

“In fact, I’m surprised about Gyan and I think his managers didn’t help him. He is really confused and I’m disappointed in him,” he told Hello FM.

“Gyan should have stood by his decision. Returning is not the best. This is about the third time he had returned from retirement [sic].

“If he knew this was possible, why the rush to come out with a statement announcing his retirement from the national team?.

“Clearly Gyan is confused and I’m highly disappointed in him, said Sarpong who coached the striker at tender age.

The former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak gaffer says the Gyan must apologize to Black Stars head coach Kwasi Appiah.

“Yea, Gyan should render an apology to Kwasi Appiah. I’ve spoken to Appiah and he still stands by his decision.”

Asamonh Gyan is Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 106 appearances. He made his debut for national team in 2003 under the tutelage of Ralf Zumdic. He went on to become the captain of the side in 2012.
