JSS Pupil beats up teacher

Keseve (V/R), Dec. 20, GNA - A 27-year-old junior secondary school (JSS) three pupil on Wednesday beat up a teacher during a Carol's Day activity at Agbeve, a fishing community in the South Tongu District in the Volta Region.

The pupil went wild and disrupted the celebration, when he subjected a teacher, who called him to order for being truant during the programme to severe beatings.

It took a hell of time for colleague teachers and some other pupils to rescue Mr Ferguson Tay, Mathematics and Science teacher, from Master Francis Sosa.

He held the teacher's neck tightly under his left armpit, as he released several blows to his head with his right hand.

The GNA was told that, the incident, which brought the Carols Day celebration to an abrupt end, which nearly degenerated into a free-for-all fight as some colleagues of the irate Sosa wanted to assist him, while the teachers and other pupils struggled to free Mr Tay from him.

A source close to the school speaking on condition of anonymity, said the pupils, under their teachers' guide, were marching through the major paths in the fairly large village on Wednesday, December 15, this year, to mark the occasion in the school.

The source said on reaching Agbodokope, a suburb of the village, Sosa, who came from nowhere on a bicycle almost disorganising the match past, by riding through the orderly movements of fellow pupils, prompting Mr Tay to give him a stroke of the cane at his back, calling him to order.

He said, Sosa rode away without any sign of anger, but some minutes later reappeared unnoticed and without any sign, jumped on the 45-year-old smallish teacher, held his neck under his armpit and delivered blows repeatedly onto his head until her was rescued. "He gave the teacher no breathing space as he held him tightly and gave the blows rapidly. But for our presence it would have been a different story", the source emphasized.

The source said Tay turned away Sosa, who appeared in school the following day to write his part of the end of term exams.

Mr Charles Oklika, Assistant PTA Chairman of the school confirmed the story to the GNA at Keseve, and said they were yet to decide on the nature of punishment for Sosa to deter other pupils. He however, could not establish speculations that Sosa, who has just registered for the 2005 BECE, would not be allowed into the school anymore except for the BECE.

Meanwhile, the GNA has learnt that a good number of the pupils in Agbeve JSS are above 20 years with some close to 30 years, a situation, which could be risky in the enforcement of discipline by tutors in the school.
