JUDGE WANTS PUBLIC SERVICE AFRICANIZED

Accra A Supreme Court judge today called for the "africanisation" of the continent's public service to enable it to contribute more effectively to its development. Mr Justice Hayfron Benjamin said employing experts from other African countries enables the continent to benefit from the vast experience of its experts He was addressing the opening of a three day international conference on "Preparing the African Public Service for the 21st Century," in Accra. The conference, organised by the Friedrich Nauman Foundation and the African Leadership Forum, is being attended by 30 public servants, scientists and politicians from Africa and Europe. Mr Hayfron Benjamin said what most African countries did after independ ence was to "indegenise" their public service and not africanise it. He noted that the public service in Africa faces many social problems and said issues like ethnicity need to be seriously considered if Africa is to meet the challenges of the next century.
