A former Deputy Minister of Trade, Murtala Mohammed is calling for the incarceration of the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Alan Kyerematen, for abandoning the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region.

Mr Mohammed noted that the factory, built by the erstwhile John Mahama administration, has lost its value because the Akufo-Addo-led administration has abandoned it.

After the factory was built, the former deputy minister said, accounting and auditing firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers valued it at $36 million but has now lost its value.

Mr Mohammed said this on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Wednesday, 27 November 2019.

“Recently, the Minister came out and said they will prosecute people over the Komenda Sugar Factory. I say the first person who should be prosecuted and jailed is the Minister of Trade,” Mr Mohammed told show host Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don).

He explained that “We handed over the factory to you, it was valued by PricewaterhouseCoopers to be about $36 million.

“After they [government] left the thing to rot and somewhere 2017 and 2018 they did a valuation and said that the value had dropped.

“If you had started using it and it was not standing idle over a year or two, it won’t lose its value. If you build a house and leave it without using it for two years will the house be the same?” he quizzed.
