The Immediate past Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, has written to the party’s delegates nationwide, urging them not to overlook the qualities of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has already led the party twice in presidential elections.
He strongly endorsed Nana Akufo-Addo as the party prepares for a super delegates’ congress on August 31, insisting that evidence adduced during the Presidential Election Petition at the Supreme Court after the 2012 election showed that the party was rather shortchanged in all processes.
“The evidence we took to the Supreme Court showed that at the Parliamentary level the NPP got more votes than NDC and Nana Akufo-Addo got more votes than the NPP parliamentarians,” he told the delegates.
“For John Mahama to have been declared the winner, he is supposed to have obtained every vote that was cast by every other party and independent candidate at the parliamentary level: clearly unbelievable and judged so by four out of the seven judges.”
He said the party’s problem was “not in our candidate attracting votes” but it was “in our inability to protect the votes.”
“We have to correct that weakness and show the voters of Ghana that when they vote for our candidate, we will make sure that their votes are properly counted and properly declared.”
Mr Obetsebi–Lamptey said, “I write accepting that I will upset colleagues and friends who are in the contest but I ask them to accept that I am guided not by any personal animosity but by my proven dedication to the cause of improving the lot of our country and our people and to the NPP which has clearly shown itself as the only group capable of providing decent and productive government for Ghana.”
“Our nation is in deep crisis,” he said, adding, “It is being governed not just by clueless and incompetent people but by a gang determined to continue to rape the country’s resources with impunity.”
“NPP must win and be declared winners of 2016 if we are to save the future of our children and Ghana,” he charged.
“We can expect the NDC once again to loot the resources of Ghana to fuel their election campaign and whilst we cannot match these illegal financial resources we must raise enough to fund our own campaign,” the former Chairman said.
He said currently, the only way the NPP could match the NDC in the election is to show seriousness in protecting the votes and also show determination about winning so that supporters would in spite of the current NDC/Mahama hardships could sacrifice to resource at the disposal of the party.
He said the NPP can look attractive if the members showed that “we are solidly united in our determination to win election 2016.”
“Let us send out a ringing message to all Ghanaians and friends of Ghana that we are united in our determination to save our country by getting rid of John Mahama and the NDC and installing an NPP government united behind Nana Akufo-Addo.”
“I am writing this letter to ask you to vote for and work for all others also to vote for Nana Akufo-Addo,” he emphasized, adding, “Let us show that there is hope in the NPP and in Ghana.”
