Jantuah gets nod

THE Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) has given Ghana's Kofi Jantuah the nod to fight any of the listed contenders for the vacant Commonwealth welterweight title created by Guyana's Andrew Murray's vacation of the title as a result of his inability to secure defences against mandatory challengers.

The CBC will recognise the first match between two of the listed contenders subject to CBC championship conditions as being for the vacant title. This formed part of decisions taken at a CBC meeting held in London last July 30.

The meeting was attended by both the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority, Nii Quaye-Mensah and Mr. S.Y.M Quansah respectively who in consultation with Jantuah's camp are pushing for a match between Jantuah and Peter Richards of England to be held in Ghana in mid October this year. The meeting also re-admitted the Canadian Professional Boxing Federation (CPBF) in the Commonwealth.

It would be recalled that the Canadian Professional Boxing Federation had refused to sanction a championship contest between Billy Erwin of Ontario, Canada and David Odoi Tetteh, Ghana, on the grounds that the Ontario Boxing Commission was not a member of CPBF, and as such did not recognise the result of the fight which was won controversially by Erwin.

A protest to the Commonwealth Boxing Council by the CPBF was not heeded to by the time the return fight took place which was won by Tetteh, as such the CPBF decided to withdraw its affiliation from the Commonwealth Boxing Council.

However, following the change in administration of the CPBF, headed by a new president Mr Ron Hayter, he wrote to the CBC for their re-admission on certain stated conditions, which the meeting examined and decided that the CPBF be re-admitted to the CBC.

Other matters decided at the meeting included the incorporation of the Commonwealth Boxing Council as a company limited by guarantee to limit its liability in the face of multiplicity of suits and the formation of an emergency committee for dealing with matters of importance in between the full half yearly meetings. Ghana was nominated to be on the executive committee.
