Jasikan District still records low standard of education

Accra, April 11, GNA - Even though education forms the foundation for the development of every society, academic performance of pupils and students in the Jasikan District of the Volta Region continue to be poor.

A five-man education committee has, therefore, been set up by some concerned citizens of the Buem Traditional Area to liaise with the District Education Oversight Committee on the resolution of the problems of education with the aim of improving it in the area.

These were contained in a communiqu=E9 issued by the Coalition for Peace and Development in Buem, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) at a mini Congress of citizens of area in Accra at the weekend. The communiqu=E9 said the low standard of education in the District required drastic measures if the Buem area was to move forward.

The Coalition announced that a three-man committee would join the District Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament for the area to meet the Regional Director of the Department of Feeder Roads to discuss ways of improving roads in the area to facilitate economic activities. The group noted that telecommunication formed an integral part of development and said the committee would also meet the Chief Executive of Ghana Telecom to ensure the expansion and improvement of the communication system in the area.

The citizens said they were disturbed by the chieftaincy dispute in the traditional area, involving the Omanhene and the divisional chiefs, which has deprived the people of an effective traditional leadership. The Group announced that it would institute an annual congress of Buem citizens, the first to be held in August this year and urged all Buem citizens to support the Coalition for the development of the area.
