Kofi Gyedin, a 28-years-old galamsey operator resident at Odumase, was seriously injured on the head after being hacked with a sharp cutlass by his colleague, Akwasi Acheampong, for flirting with his (Acheampong) girl friend.
The victim was trying to get his clothes from the woman who is known in the farming community as a laundress around 9pm., on August 15, 2012 when the incident occurred.
After being angered, Acheampong came out with a cutlass and hacked Kofi Gyedin on his head and neck.
The suspect has since been thrown into jail to serve a 36-month term after pleading guilty to the charge of causing unlawful bodily harm when he appeared before an Obuasi circuit court.
Presenting the facts of case, DSP Yaw Obeng Asubonteng told the court presided over by Gilbert Ayisi Addo that the new convict Akwesi Acheampong, 30, was a galamsey operator residing at Odumase near Obuasi.
His victim, Kofi Gyedin also a galamsey operator, lived in the same community with him. On August 15, 2012, at about 9pm., prosecution said, the complainant went to look for the convict's girlfriend, a laundress, to collect his clothes he had given to her for washing.
According to the police prosecutor, the convict became provoked by the timing and therefore dashed into his room and came back with a cutlass, which he used to hack Kofi Gyedin on the head, causing serious injury to him.
The victim was taken to the hospital where he was admitted for treatment, DSP Asuboteng added.
Akwasi Acheampong was arrested, and after police investigation, he was charged and arraigned, prosecution concluded.
