Jean Mensa addresses EC errors regarding figures on the number of people registered

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), Jean Mensa, has acknowledged mistakes in the commission's visual representations of the number of people registered in the ongoing limited voters' registration exercise, set to conclude on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

The EC faced criticism for inaccuracies in the graphics shared on social media to update Ghanaians on the registration progress.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, Jean Mensa explained that the errors were due to the software used for the infographics, as reported by citinewsroom.com.

She mentioned that the commission has now switched back to using Excel to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

"Whilst I do not hold brief for the team, because they were relying on CorelDRAW to come up with these pie charts and graphs and so on, they were doing it manually. And so, what we have done is go back to the drawing board and use Excel.

"And so, we may not have those colourful graphs, and the focus should not be on that because the application that was being used was not able to do accurate tabulations, so you will find that people had to do it manually. So, CorelDRAW has been abandoned, and Excel has been applied," she is quoted as having said.

Jean Mensa emphasized that the commission's transparency in admitting mistakes demonstrates its commitment to resolving electoral issues.

"But again, I say this because we are a listening Commission and intend to build trust, you come back and let the people know what went wrong and what has been done."
