Flagbearer of NDC, John Mahama
The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, says he will support any bill that aims to improve education in Ghana.
Responding to a question on whether he supports the Free Senior High School Bill, he affirmed his support for any bill that would enhance the policy.
However, he emphasized the necessity of subjecting it to stakeholder consultation.
Mr. Mahama, speaking at a media engagement in Accra on Sunday, July 7, insisted that the bill must undergo stakeholder engagement.
"I support any bill that will improve our education, firstly to make it sustainable, secondly to ensure quality education for our children, and also any bill that will achieve this is something that I will support.
"I haven't seen the bill, and I don't think that it has yet been subjected to stakeholder consultation, but we would want to see the bill. I am sure that once the Cabinet has approved it, it will be laid before parliament. When it is presented in parliament, the normal procedure is to refer it to the responsible committee.
"I am hoping that when that bill is referred to the responsible committee, it will conduct the proper stakeholder consultation so that we all can be on board. If you are making fundamental changes to our educational system, I think that parents, teachers, and everybody who has a stake in education must be involved."
