Joy FM to fete 6,000 street children

Accra, April 7, GNA - About 6,000 street children would be feted at this year's "Annual Easter Soup Kitchen" on Holy Saturday under the auspices of Joy FM, an Accra-based radio station.

The event, primarily a social party for the street children, takes place every year during Easter at the Holy Gardens, near Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

A statement issued by Joy FM on Wednesday said with the support of various donors, sponsoring organisations and medical institutions, food and drinks would be provided to thousands of displaced children and other street people.

"They will also benefit from free medical services, including screening for various ailments and medication," it said.

The statement said with the assistance of students from the Volta Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon and other public-spirited individuals and organisations, the children would be well catered for.

It mentioned Mr Klaus VonBackustein, Planning Committee Chairman of the event, as saying that next year the station would begin the adoption and support of selected street children.

"We have been doing this for the last eight years and we believe that it is time together with our patrons and supporters to begin to take some of these children off the street," the statement quoted Mr VonBackustein. 07 April 04
