Tarkwa, July 20, GNA - A Tarkwa Circuit Court has acquitted and discharged Abu Ayambilla, a labourer, who was accused of conspiring with armed men to rob a plantation.
He pleaded guilty but he spent eight months on remand.
Police Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Edward Paddy, had told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo, that on November 22, last year, at around 1100 hours, at Sefwi Achimfo, a gang of armed men stormed the Acoplant Plantation amidst the firing of guns so the entire community fled into a nearby bush.
He said Abu, who was then returning from the farm, heard of the commotion and rushed to the scene and rescued two children, aged four months and seven years, from one of the rooms to safety.
Inspector Paddy said the gang fled with 20 bags of dry cocoa beans, cocoa spraying chemicals and spraying machines, among others.
He said Abu was later reported to the Police for allegedly leading the gang to invade the community and after investigations there was lack of evidence linking him to the robbery.
The judge, in acquitting Mr Ayambilla said: "Abu should have been rewarded for bravery and compensated for the risk he took in saving the lives of the children."
