Judges Should Be Above Suspicion - Speaker

Fri, 24 Jan 2003 Source: gna

The Speaker of Parliament, Peter Ala Adjetey says parliamentary investigations into allegations of corruption in the Judiciary in no way interfered with or compromised the independence of the third arm of government.

The Judicial committee of Parliament was, last year, tasked to investigate allegations of corruption in the Judiciary. But Chief Justice E.K. Wiredu expressed concern about the exercise saying that it was unconstitutional for one arm of government to investigate another arm.

But Mr Ala Adjetey today said that as representatives of the people, Parliament is ''obliged to ensure that such matters of national importance are not swept under the carpet but put under the searchlight of publicity."

"...I have no doubt in my mind that the steps taken were responsible and in the national interest since judges like Caesar's wife should be above suspicion," he added.

Mr. Adjetey was addressing the ninth public forum and photo exhibition on Parliament themed: "10 years of the restoration of the Parliamentary Democracy." He said the report of the Committee on the Judiciary, which, undertook the work, is yet to be laid before the House for consideration.
