Judicial Council approves Prof. Frimpong Oppong, Justice Bernasko Essah for Supreme Court appointment - Report

The Judicial Council of Ghana has reportedly approved the nominations of Prof. Richard Frimpong Oppong, a fellow of the Ghana Academy of Sciences and professor of law, and Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, for appointment to the Supreme Court.

According to a report by thelawplatform.online, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced the approval of the two nominees at the inauguration of the Governing Board of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre on Tuesday, July 15, 2024.

The report indicated that President Akufo-Addo said Prof. Frimpong Oppong and Justice Bernasko Essah would now be presented to the Parliament of Ghana to be vetted by the Appointment Committee of the House.

About the Two Nominees

A profile of Prof. Frimpong Oppong shared by thelawplatform.com showed that he has a wealth of experience in the practice of law in Ghana and on the global stage as an arbitrator, among other roles.

He is also a respected teacher of law with teaching experience in Ghana, Europe, and America.

If his appointment is approved, he would be the second academic on the bench. Prof. Frimpong Oppong would also join the bench with predecessors like Justice Professors Date-Bah and Mensah-Bonsu, who have high academic laurels and achievements.

The second nominee, Justice Bernasko Essah, has practiced as a State Attorney, private practitioner, and Justice of the High Court and Court of Appeal.

She is a member of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ).
