There are still bodies of the dead from the June 3 disaster that are yet to be identified, Accra’s mayor has disclosed.
Dr Alfred Nii Oko Vanderpuije, therefore, called on families who are yet to find relatives after the twin disaster to contact the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for identification.
“So that we can give them a befitting burial,” the AMA Chief Executive stressed.
He was speaking at the one year memorial anniversary held at the Ernest Bruce Memorial Methodist Church in Accra on Friday, June 3.
The flood disaster, which hit Accra, was exacerbated by a gas explosion at the Goil Filling Station near Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
The flood-and-fire disaster left in its wake over 150 lives lost and several others injured. A majority of the injured were hospitalized at the 37 Military Hospital.
Dr Vanderpuije outlined measures taken by the AMA since the disaster struck to forestall a similar occurrence.
He said unauthorized structures have been demolished while drains have been dredged.
"It is important to note that after June 3rd, 420,000 metric tonnes of silt have been dredged out of the Korle Lagoon.
"And let me set the record straight that that represents about 45 per cent of the work that needs to be done at the Korle Lagoon."
The memorial service, which was attended by President John Dramani Mahama and several members of his government, was immediately followed by a laying of wreaths at surface zero of the disaster.
