The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Korle Klottey constituency, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has commiserated with victims of the June 3 flood and fire disaster and admonished the public to take action in order to prevent the occurrence of disasters.

“In remembrance of the hundreds who perished, let us be proactive in our duty in whichever area we find ourselves, whether in the proper maintenance of equipment or stringent adherence to standard operating procedures or simply disposing of our rubbish in the correct place. We all have a role to play and safety must be paramount in all our activities.

“We must stop singing from the ‘Never again’ hymn sheet and be proactive and preemptive rather than reactive,” She posted on her Facebook Wall.

The MP has collaborated with other partners to create a mobile app to issue weather warnings and alert users of unsafe areas in the event of disasters within the constituency.

“It is our hope that the success of this project will result in its use nationwide,” She added.

On 3 June 2015, over 150 persons who had sought shelter at a GOIL Filling Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange from the rains that had poured for several hours, were charred to death in an explosion when water seeped into the underground tanks of the fuel station, and displaced the fuel which later ignited.

Hundreds also sustained varying degrees of injury leaving them with scars that will forever remind them of the unfortunate incident.
