June 3 disaster: Over 50 bodies yet to be identified

Over fifty bodies from the June 3 disaster are yet to be identified and claimed by their relatives a year after the horrific incident.

Government’s official figure from the fire and flood disaster at the Goil Filling station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra puts the death toll at 160.

Friday, June 3, 2016 will be exactly a year since the twin-disaster ripped apart the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and killed dozens of Ghanaians.

Alhaji Benjamin Seidu, Director of the National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly during Starr FM's anniversary summit at the disaster site revealed that the remains of over 50 people are still lying unclaimed at various hospitals in the capital.

“50 to 60 dead bodies are yet to be claimed at the various hospitals…those bodies have been identified by their relatives,” Alhaji Seidu said.

During the discussions, several victims stated that they are yet to receive any assistance a year after the disaster.

Some of the victims who spoke to Starr FM’s Bernard Nassara Saibu narrated that even though their names were written for assistance, they have not been contacted by any authority since the incident.

But Alhaji Seidu in a discussion said victims who were registered and have not been compensated should visit the AMA office in Accra for their compensation package.
