A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and former President of FIDA-Ghana, Ms. Ursula Owusu, has described the June 4 celebration as a 'Monumental Fraud' and an insult to Ghanaians, considering how its revolutionary leader, Ex-President Rawlings "defrauded" Ghanaians into accepting his personal ambition, under the guise of fighting for probity and accountability.
Ursula Owusu made this statement during a panel discussion on PeaceFM's "Kokrokoo" Programme on Wednesday.
According to her, there is nothing worth celebrating about June 4 as Former President Rawlings would make Ghanaians believe.
"It is the height of hypocrisy...June 4 does not need to be highlighted and projected at all by anyone, especially the media, so as not to worsen the pain of family members of victims, as well as passionate Ghanaians who do not want to remember the 'dreadful' occasion...Rawlings' behaviour, antics, ideas and pronouncements were all not justified...I don't know what they are celebrating," she fumed.
She told Kwami Sefa-Kayi, host of the programme, that "June 4 should be denied the oxygen of publicity", to make way for more developmental issues to be discussed, since its continuous celebration is an insult to all Ghanaians.
The outspoken gender advocate and legal luminary opined that by observing the day (June 4), Ghanaians are "celebrating the ambition of one man who never allowed himself to be probed and has no regrets at all in his past dealings."
"...instead of wasting our time to celebrate this shameful act, victims and persons involved should rather relax in the comfort of their homes and listen to Gospel Music as a form of inspiration and encouragement," Ursula said.
