The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Council on Saturday conferred Honorary Doctorate Degrees on seven personalities for their meritorious services to mankind.

This coincided with the 2013 Founders’ Day Special Congregation, a programme that seeks to recognise the vision and immense role played by the founding fathers in the establishment of Ghana’s foremost Science and Technology University.

Those awarded the Doctorate Degrees include Justice V.C.R.A.C. Crabbe, an eminent Ghanaian jurist and former Justice of the Supreme Court, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, Omanhene of Mampong and former Registrar of KNUST, Mr Paul Victor Obeng, KNUST Council Chairman, and Professor Ernestina Addy, a Public Health Expert.

The others are Professor Sir J.W. Acheampong, a Research Scientist, Mr Asare Akuffo, a banker, and Professor Emmanuel Acquah, an Agricultural Scientist.

Professor Robert Clement Abaidoo, Provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Ecobank Ghana Limited also received special awards for their commitment to the sustainable growth of the University.

The award winners each received a citation, congratulating them for distinguishing themselves in their respective fields of endeavours, and also decorated with robes to signify their new status.

The occasion was graced by a host of personalities from academia, traditional authorities, the clergy and Government officials.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene and Chancellor of the KNUST, lauded the awardees for being duty-conscious, and urged them not to rest on their oars but strive for excellence in all that they do.

He said the university will forever be grateful to the late Otumfuo, Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, and the late Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, for their selflessness and dedication in establishing the KNUST.

The Asantehene advised policy-makers to allocate more funds for science and technology education to help accelerate the nation’s socio-economic growth.

Mr P.V. Obeng, on behalf of the awardees, thanked the KNUST Council for the honour bestow on them.
