Justice Crabbe lauds probing of interdicted CHRAJ Boss

A former Supreme Court Judge, Justice V.C.R.A.C Crabbe has commended the President and the Chief Justice for heeding to the petition for investigations to be conducted into the activities of former CHRAJ boss, Lauretta Vivian Lamptey.

In an interview with TV3’s Odelia Ofori, he described the process as good for democracy. Lauretta Vivian Lamptey assumed the position as CHRAJ boss for 33 months and lived in a hotel accruing bills of over 200,000 dollars.

“I think it’s a very good thing in the exercise of responsibilities as citizens of this country in the name of democracy. I think we should commend the President and the authorities that they have the courage to set the legal processes in motion so that you really appreciate it when we talk of the rule of law.

We also have a Constitution which ought to work and so far it’s been working.

An incident like that of the CHRAJ Commissioner’s episodes are the milestones which teach us whether we are on the right course or not. The actions which have been taken so far are so heartening to people like me”.

“It’s a question of principle. Public officers are accountable. All of us holding public offices have a certain responsibility. There are ethics which go with the offices we hold, and if we stray away from the right path, I think it’s appropriate for the right authorities to investigate the matter”.

President John Dramani Mahama directed the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Woode, to investigate corruption claims against the Commissioner for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) four months ago.

The Commissioner reportedly spent $148,000 on her 33-month rent and an additional $180,000 on renovating her official residence. But the former CHRAJ boss claimed she secured a loan to fund her activities.
