The Acting Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has nominated Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang to temporarily assume the role of Ghana’s Chief Justice for a period of at least ten days.

According to Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, this is to enable Justice Pwamang to fulfill the responsibility of leading the country’s judiciary in his absence, which he has announced is scheduled from Monday, August 18, to Thursday, August 28, 2025.

This was contained in a circular dated August 13, 2025, signed by Justice Baffoe-Bonnie and addressed to all justices of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, and heads of judicial divisions and units, was also copied to members of the Judicial Council, the General Legal Council, and the Acting Judicial Secretary.

The circular titled ‘Absence from duty’ reads; “I shall be away from the jurisdiction from Monday, 18th August to Thursday, 28th August 2025.

“In my absence, the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, His Lordship Justice Gabriel Pwamang will act. Please accept my compliments.”

Justice Pwamang, a senior Supreme Court judge, is currently the chair of the five member committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions seeking the removal of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

The committee was formed in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State.
