KATH institutes award to recognize sponsors

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has instituted an award scheme to recognize outstanding contribution to the facility by individuals and organizations.

Dubbed “KATH Board Special Award” it is meant to honor people and institutions, who have been assisting in the mobilization of medical equipment and consumables to improve its clinical services.

The maiden awards ceremony was held in Kumasi at the weekend and there were 20 awardees.

They included Dr. Kwaku Oteng, Chief Executive of Angel Group of Companies, who single-handedly has provided the hospital with six new patient monitors and paid for the maintenance of some medical equipment at a total cost of GH?134,000.00.

Also recognized was Mr. Jeffery Kwaku Amponsah, Managing Director of Buyers and Ways. This was in appreciation of his donation of biochemistry and electrolyte analyzers and other consumables valued at GH?75,000.00 to the dialysis unit.

Unique Royal Club in Kumasi received award for its supply of a GH?40,000.00 ventilator.

The others included SIC Insurance, Prefos, Money Link, Christ Apostolic Church, Direct Relief International USA, Bay Logistics and Zeal Environmental, Takoradi.

Madam Abenaa Akuamoah Boateng, Executive Director, Women’s Health to Wealth, Dr. Seth Lartey, Consultant Opthalmologist, Dr. Richard Selormey, Maxilofacial Surgeon, Dr. John Adabie-Appiah, Paediatric Intensivist, Dr. Ernest Opuni Kwarko, Specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecologist, Dr. Kwadwo Eyeson, Specialist Nephrologist, Dr. Rockefeller Oteng, Lead Clinician, Mrs. Marina Assabil, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, and Ms. Kate Boamah, a nurse, were all recognized by the hospital for their unique contribution.

Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, the Chief Executive Officer, said the hospital required leadership that was transformational and entrepreneurial to deal with the myriad of challenges.

It was therefore important for the directorate and unit heads to adopt forward looking strategies to overcome the difficulties and enhance performance, he added.

He announced that the management had conducted needs assessment and would soon establish an endowment fund – to seek public support to acquire the needed medical equipment and facilities.

Nana Dr. Effah Apenteng, Paramount Chief of Bompata, and Chairman of KATH’s Board, said the scheme was instituted to create the needed synergies among key stakeholders to tackle problems the hospital had been struggling with.

He underlined the resolve of the Board to work with everybody to improve the quality of healthcare services.
