Kumasi, Oct 7, GNA - The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Tuesday expressed concern about the rampant theft of electrical cables that were installed recently in the Kumasi Metropolis.
It said long stretches of streetlights recently repaired and fitted with 250 watts bulbs at great cost were not functioning due to the activities of thieves.
A statement issued in Kumasi and signed by the KMA Public Relations Officer, Mr Kwame Frimpong, identified new Asokwa, Dadiesoaba, new Bekwai road and Ahmadiyya areas, as the worse affected areas where several electrical cables had been stolen.
It said over the past few months, electrical cables worth 62 million cedis had been stolen from streetlights at the new Amakom near the Kumasi Sports Stadium.
The statement said the situation had plunged the affected areas into darkness resulting in the increase in criminal activities. It said the activities of the thieves were undermining the efforts of the KMA to improve street lighting in the metropolis.
The statement appealed to the residents to be vigilant and to protect the streetlights from thieves to ensure that they continued functioning to reduce crime in their communities.
