KNUST Chairs Newly Formed National Youth Parliament

A national Youth Parliament was last Saturday formed as part of efforts to strengthen the youth front in Ghana.

In a meeting held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with representation from the various Students’ Parliaments existing in the various public tertiary institutions all over Ghana, a decision was taken to involve other youth parliaments which are not on campuses.

An interim management committee was composed with representation from all parliaments of the various tertiary campuses.

Prosper Zuma, speaker of the KNUST Students’ parliament, who emerged chairman of the Interim Management Committee expressed his desire to work hard to champion the course of the youth of Ghana in an interview with focus fm news reporter Bernard Buachi after the meeting. He also called on members of the house to support him deliver as expected of him.

The university of Ghana, after a long debate was given the mandate of drafting the standing orders of the National Youth Parliament.

The Youth Parliament project is an initiative of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana and is aimed at demystifying the institution of parliament and bringing parliament closer to the people. The youth parliament among other objectives aims at training the youth to understand parliamentary practices and procedures, consolidating democracy and offering leadership development to the Ghanaian youth.

Also present at the formation meeting of the National Youth Parliament were representatives of the National Union of Ghana Students(NUGS) and former Speakers and leadership of the various Students’ Parliaments,
