Kumasi, Sept. 3, GNA -- Following the rumpus on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus triggered by the attacks on students of GUSSS Hostel, popularly called 'Brunei' and the resultant death of one of the students (READ), the authorities of the university has declared a state of emergency with immediate effect until further notice.

The university has meanwhile expressed deep regrets about the sad event and has conveyed its sympathies to the bereaved family, while cautioning students to be "vigilant in these trying times."

According to a release issued in Kumasi and signed by Mrs. Sophia Quashie-Sam, Registrar of the University at the weekend, students have been cautioned to refrain from any acts of indiscipline since any student caught breaching any regulation will be held responsible and dealt with accordingly.

The university has assured students and staff that every effort is being put in place to beef up security on campus since arrangements are underway with the Ashanti Regional Police Command and the Northern Military Command to provide extra security cover and patrols on campus, the release said.

The University, as a result of the state of emergency has consequently constituted measures such as the immediate close down of the Bomso taxi rank and the University transport/security park for any kind of activity.

The release said other measures also include the shutting of gates from 12 midnight to 6 am, the stop and search of taxis entering and leaving the university, whiles students and staff are also required to carry identity cards at all times and be ready to produce upon request.
