Agyewodin Adu Gyamfi Ampem II, Omanhene of Acherensua Traditional Area and Chairman of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Council, on Friday inaugurated a 22-member Golden Jubilee Planning Committee of the university in Kumasi. The Committee, chaired by Professor E.Y. Safo, Pro-Vice Chancellor, will, among other things, make recommendations to the university on the programme of activities for the celebration that would be climaxed with a jubilee congregation on March 2002 and an Alumni Jubilee congress in December next year.
It will also raise funds and sponsorships in support of the jubilee activities and recommend for consideration of the University Council awards to deserving individuals and institutions. Inaugurating it, Agyewodin Ampem told the committee to try and build goodwill among the alumni, university, government, private sector, Non-Governmental Organisation (NGOs) and other educational institutions.
This, he noted, was necessary to help attract more support for the university\'s programmes. Prof. Safo said the committee recognises the magnitude of the task ahead, saying \"ours is a call to serve, a duty to our alma mater\".
He expressed the hope that, with the co-operation and collaboration of the university administration, the committee would deliver and live up to expectation.
The ceremony was also used to formally inaugurate the university\'s alumni national council which has Mr Kwame Saarah-Mensah, former Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister and Minister for Youth and Sports, as its president.
Professor John Sefa Kwadwo Ayim, Vice Chancellor, who performed the inauguration, singled out for commendation the university\'s alumni in America for linking the KNUST with a number of international donor agencies and universities in America.
