Godfred Owusu presents his project at Project Green competition
A final-year student of Human Settlement Planning at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Godfred Owusu, has emerged as the overall winner of the 14th edition of the Project Green competition.
The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the global event, which brought together innovative thinkers and environmental advocates from across the world.
The Project Green competition is an international platform that recognises groundbreaking projects and initiatives focused on environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and community impact.
According to a VokLive post on X, Godfred’s winning project stood out among hundreds of entries submitted by participants from over 50 countries, showcasing practical solutions to environmental challenges faced by communities in the Global South.
His project, titled ‘Eco-Haven: A Green Resilience Model for Informal Settlements’, proposed an integrated urban planning framework that combines green infrastructure, community-led development, and climate-smart technologies.
The model was praised by judges for its scalability, community involvement, and potential to transform vulnerable settlements into resilient, sustainable environments.
This historic win makes Godfred Owusu the first Ghanaian and only the third African ever to win the overall title in the competition’s 14-year history.
His victory has been hailed as a significant milestone not only for Ghana but also for the broader African academic and sustainability communities.
In his acceptance speech, Godfred expressed gratitude to his lecturers, mentors, and peers at KNUST for their continuous support.
He dedicated the award to young African innovators working to solve pressing environmental issues despite limited resources and systemic challenges.
“This award is a reminder that the future is green, and Africa has a vital role to play,” he stated.
Faculty members from the Department of Planning at KNUST lauded the achievement, describing it as a testament to the university’s commitment to academic excellence and real-world impact.
Godfred’s win is expected to open new doors for collaboration and funding opportunities for his project, as well as inspire a new wave of environmentally focused research and action among young professionals across Africa.
He is set to participate in a global innovation tour and engage with international organisations on sustainable urban development.
