KUMACA deaths: Authorities were negligent – Muntaka

Member of Parliament for Asawase, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has said authorities in charge of education in Ghana, especially in the Ashanti Region, have been careless in handling the circumstances leading to the death of students at the Kumasi Academy(KUMACA).

According to him, the deaths started occurring in March this year but the authorities failed to institute measures to find out the causes, in order to enable them find solutions to it.

Three more students of the school have been confirmed dead.

The latest report on Tuesday, 5 December, means a total of six students have passed away in the latest tragedy that has struck the school.

The recent three; two females and a male, died at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) hospital, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Cassandra Twum-Ampofo confirmed to Graphic Online.

25 more students are on admission at the KNUST hospital with authorities unable to determine the cause of deaths.

Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of the Ghana Yensom show on Accra 100.5FM on Wednesday December 6, Mr Mubarak said: “ The authorities were negligent because this problem started in March and they failed to find solutions to it. Now it is still happening.”

He added: “Now the World Health Organisation has also come in to help deal with the situation, that is good and so I'll urge parents who have gone for their wards to send them back to be vaccinated.”
