The Ghana National Fire Service has begun investigating reports of fire personnel extorting traders impacted by the recent Kantamanto fire.

The investigations announced by the GNFS come after multiple reports of victims being asked to pay money for attestation letters by fire officials.

In a statement dated January 9, 2025, the Head of Public Relations, DO II Desmond E. Ackah, stated that officers found guilty of extorting money from the victims will be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the GNFS.

“The Service has received reports that some victims have been asked to pay monies for these letters at the Accra City Fire Station. We assure all affected victims that the matter is being taken seriously.

“A thorough investigation is underway, and any officer found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the GNFS's disciplinary code,” parts of the statement read.

According to the state institution, victims are not required to pay for attestation letters related to fire and emergency incidents.

It further clarified that personnel are not authorized to request such payments.

“The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) wishes to inform the general public, especially victims of the recent Kantamanto fire, that NO FEES are charged for the issuance of attestation letters related to fire and emergency incidents.

“The GNFS categorically states that this practice is unauthorized, and the public is strongly advised not to pay any fees for requesting attestation letters,” the statement further explained.

The Ghana National Fire Service has also urged the general public to report any personnel involved in the unethical act of extorting money from victims in exchange for attestation letters.
