The T.I Ahmadiyya Senior High School in the Northern Regional town of Salaga, has been closed down indefinitely following violent clashes between students and the police that left one resident dead.
The clash ensued following the alleged prevention of a slippers-wearing female student from sitting terminal examinations on Wednesday, July 29. Some students, who were angered by the incident, threatened the teachers especially one Mistress Ajara Suleimana.
Ms Suleimana, our correspondent says, reported the matter to the headmaster, who consequently reported to the police.
Four of the students were, as a result, picked up on Wednesday, TV3's Zubaida Ismail said on Thursday.
But upon the plea of the District Chief Executive (DCE) and some elders, the students were released on Wednesday night.
But on Thursday, students whose front was allegedly infiltrated by some residents, stormed the school's premises and later at the Salaga Police station to protest against the arrest of their mates, where shots were fired resulting in the death of one resident, who joined the students' protest.
Others injured are also receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
The few police officers who were overpowered by the angry crowd before firing the shots, had the windscreen of a vehicle with registration number GP 2545 smashed. Salaga T.I Amass' storehouse was also set ablaze.
It took a police reinforcement from the regional capital, Tamale to overpower the crowd.
TV3's Zubaida Ismail says calm has now returned to the area following the beefing up of security with personnel from the police and military.
The Northern Regional Security Council and Traditional leaders also intervened, culminating in the closure of the school.
Karaga SHS
In a related development, the Karaga SHS has been closed down after students were enraged and went on rampage following a ban on mobile phone usage in school.
Stakeholders are deliberating on the issues to restore calm.
