Kasoa Nyanyano fisherfolk, mongers unperturbed about Coronavirus

As government and security agencies continue to trumpet the need for the adherence to the social distancing directive as a measure to curb the spread of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic, more and more Ghanaians continue to throw caution to the wind.

It still cannot be ascertained whether the defiance to the President’s directive is one born out of ignorance or a necessity to survive.

GhanaWeb’s cameras captured some residents of Kasoa Nyanyano, a fishing community on Saturday going about business as usual with the sale of fish and other seafood at the beach.

Several of them could be seen lined up in a long queue with little or no spacing as they waited their turn to be served by the fisherfolk in the area.

Almost all the people captured by our lens had no personal protective equipment on, raising concerns about the education of the fast-spreading disease.

Aside the social distancing directive, President Akufo-Addo imposed a 14-day lockdown on Greater Accra and some parts of the Ashanti Region which took effect on March 30.

Ghanaians have been advised to stay home if they have nothing urgent to do in town. When in town the advice is to make sure not to get too close to anyone as everyone is a potential Coronavirus case.

The police has further warned that recalcitrant citizens who fail to obey the lockdown restrictions will either taste a 14-year jail sentence or be asked to pay a fine of between GH¢12,000 to GH¢60, 000.

Ghana’s Coronavirus case count has increased to 214 as at Sunday, April 5 with 5 deaths.
